The Bhutan government has announced plans to deploy up to 10,000 Bitcoin from its national holdings to support the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City, a special administrative region in southern Bhutan. Launched in 2024, the project aims to create high-value jobs and curb youth migration by attracting global businesses.
Gelephu Mindfulness City is designed as an economic hub for sectors including finance, fintech, green energy, healthcare, technology, and agriculture. The region offers regulatory flexibility for crypto and digital asset firms and supports Bhutan’s existing Bitcoin mining initiatives.
Officials said the Bitcoin allocation, valued at roughly $875 million, will follow risk-managed treasury and yield strategies while prioritizing long-term preservation.
Bhutan currently ranks among the top countries by Bitcoin holdings, with most of its reserves generated through mining. The initiative forms part of a broader national strategy to leverage Bitcoin for sustainable economic development.
