Apple Takes Its 30% Bite From AI Innovation
OpenAI’s ChatGPT app is wowing the crowd as the AI revolution gathers steam. But a well-known software firm secretly reaps the rewards among the clapping and cheers. Apple still has a means to snag a sizable piece of the AI pie, even though it may not be at the forefront of generative AI.
With the release of an iPhone app for ChatGPT, OpenAI’s endeavour picked up steam and quickly shot to the top of the App Store charts. An accomplishment that was further underlined by Apple’s designation of the app as a “must-have” under its “Essentials” category was the app’s quick ascent to the top spot in the free apps category.
Let’s talk about Apple’s infamous 30% cut, also known as the “Apple Tax,” on all new subscriptions purchased through iOS. The fee has received some criticism, particularly from cryptocurrency users who would find in-app NFT purchases to be pricey. Nevertheless, OpenAI decided to abide by Apple’s rules by using its built-in in-app purchase system rather than launching a separate membership website.
This means that Apple retains $6 of the $20 per month that iOS consumers pay for each ChatGPT Plus subscription.
