AI To Help Trace Necklace Owner
A necklace crafted from the tooth of a megalodon shark was discovered in the Titanic wreckage 111 years after the famed ship fell, according to the BBC. Magellan, a Guernsey-based company, made the find after using two submarines to create the first full-size digital scan of the lost luxury passenger liner.
The project was the largest underwater scan in history, with over 700,000 photos taken from every angle to create a precise 3D reconstruction.
A turquoise and gold necklace with the teeth of a Megalodon, an extinct shark species and the largest shark to have ever lived, was discovered in one of the photos. Artefacts, however, are not permitted to be retrieved from the debris due to a pre-existing agreement.
The company is now hoping that an AI-driven technology could help in identifying its owner and finding family members. They are using AI and facial recognition to monitor footage of passengers boarding the ship in the hopes they catch a glimpse of the jewelry being worn by its owner.
