AI Helps Nab Silent Killer In Mozambique
Mozambique is implementing a groundbreaking initiative to combat tuberculosis (TB) within its high-security prisons.
The program uses artificial intelligence (AI) and portable X-ray machines to rapidly test inmates for TB.
The initiative, supported by the UN-backed Stop TB Partnership, aims to provide early detection and containment of the disease.
The local non-profit organization is conducting a large-scale test of AI technology in three prisons in Maputo, providing results in less than five minutes, a significant improvement from traditional methods that could take up to three days.
The AI program processes the results in the courtyard of the maximum-security jail, a crucial step in tackling TB, which is known for its rapid spread in confined spaces.
The UN reported that prisons in Mozambique were 50% over capacity in 2022. The AI-driven program aims to identify positive cases promptly, isolate affected inmates, and prevent further transmission within the prison walls.
