AI Finds 40.87 Lakh Fake Mobile Users
A study by the Union Ministry of Communications found 40.87 lakh fake mobile connections in India, out of 87.85 crore analyzed. The country has a subscriber base of 131 crore in 22 Licenced Service Areas circles.
The Ministry of Communications’ secretary, K Rajaraman, has revealed that 40.87 lakh fraud connections detected using ASTR, an AI and facial recognition solution for telecom SIM subscriber verification, have been disconnected. The study surveyed 87 crore mobile connections in 22 LSA circles across India in phase 1, revealing 44,582 Point of Sales (PoS) of telecom service providers involved in the sale of such connections.
Jammu and Kashmir’s 1.20 crore mobile connections were analyzed, with 15,194 obtained on fake or forged documents. Haryana’s 3.08 crore connections had 5.33 lakh numbers obtained using fake documents. Punjab circle had 3.17 crore connections, 1.51 lakh fraud connections, and 1.44 lakh disconnected numbers. West Bengal circle had the highest number of 12 lakh fraudulent connections without a FIR lodged. The Ministry calls for more FIRs, prosecution against PoS involved in fraudulent mobile connections, and integration of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System with the National Crime Records Bureau/Central Equipment Identity Register.
