AI Chip Startup d-Matrix Raises $110 mn
At a time when many chip startups are struggling to secure capital, Silicon Valley-based artificial intelligence semiconductor startup d-Matrix has raised $110 million from investors including Microsoft Corp.
According to individuals contacted by Reuters, Nvidia’s dominant position in the AI chip market as a result of a formidable combination of hardware and software has scared off potential investors in some firms.
Temasek of Singapore led the Series B fundraising round, which also included Palo Alto, California venture company Playground Global and Microsoft. The company has previously raised $44 million.
D-Matrix designs chips for generative AI applications like ChatGPT, using digital “in-memory compute” to optimize AI computer code efficiency. The company’s chip technology uses less energy to crunch data for generative AI responses. D-Matrix sets itself apart from Nvidia by focusing on the “inference” portion of AI processing, rather than competing with Nvidia by creating large AI model training technology.
