The Quick Rise of Ethscriptions

By Ruchi Sharma

Bitcoin introduced inscriptions on satoshis at the beginning of 2023. Inscriptions are the metadata added or “inscribed” onto Bitcoin satoshis, the smallest unit of the Bitcoin currency, which can include information attached to transactions. In a very short span of time Bitcoin inscriptions witnessed huge success. Inspired by this impressive success of Bitcoin inscriptions, Ethscriptions were launched in June 2023 for forming and exchanging digital assets on the Ethereum blockchain and caught the interest of industry participants in no time despite the fact that they come with a limitation of size: Ethsciptions must be under 96 kilobyte. So, let’s size these Ethscriptions up and try to make a sense of them.

What are Ethscriptions?

Ethereum inscription is a unique way of generating and exchanging digital assets on the blockchain. It is a distinct data Uniform Resource Identifier that makes sure the ownership and originality changes on the basis of input data of the transactions.

How do Ethscriptions function?

Developed by Tom Lehman, co-founder of Genius.com, Ethscriptions were launched on June 17, 2023. Ethscriptions differ from typical financial transactions as they use Ethereum calldata to promote communication among entities and smart contracts by directly inscribing

non-financial data onto the Ethereum main chain. This novel technique delivers cost, accessibility, and security as well as offers a decentralized alternative to contract storage.

This invention has generated more than 130,000 Ethscriptions since inception. To increase its popularity Tom Lehman also released 10,000 Ethereum punks, which were sold out just in a few hours.

How are Ethscriptions processed?

The website Ethscriptions.com gives users the resources they need to produce an Ethscription.

The “Create Ethscriptions” option on the website’s home page directs viewers to a page where they can upload an image to be “Ethscribed.”

Users who want to use Ethscribe would have to link a MetaMask-like Ethereum wallet software.

Images up to 96 KB in size can be uploaded from the user’s laptop once the wallet is connected.

The user signs the transaction from their wallet after using the “Ethscribe” button to create the Ethscription.

How do you transfer an Ethscription?

The manual procedure for transferring an Ethscription to another wallet is outlined in detail on the Ethscriptions.com website. It is essential that the users initiate a zero-Ether transaction to the new recipient’s wallet, including the Ethscription ID in the “Hex data” field of the transaction. The original transaction hash that produced the Ethscription is represented by the Ethscription ID.

How different are Ethscriptions from Bitcoin Inscriptions?

Since Ethscriptions were developed in response to the success of Bitcoin Ordinals, they have a lot in common. One can directly upload non-financial data to a blockchain using either of these protocols. Ethscriptions and Ordinals can both be used by people to exchange items, add details to transactions, and more.

Contrary to appearances, Ethscriptions and Bitcoin Ordinals operate extremely differently. Ethscriptions employ Ethereum’s calldata, whereas Ordinals are kept in the smart contract transaction data on the Bitcoin network. This usually results in a less centralized inscription that is easier to process and less expensive. According to its developers, the calldata inscription technique is intended to avoid the significant gas costs associated with Bitcoin Ordinals.

The operational differences constitute the last point. While Ordinals can be the same images on different coins, Ethscriptions must be distinct images, which means that no Ethscription generated before within a block or the same transaction block can be the same. Additionally, although Ordinals can store up to 4 gigabytes of data, Ethscriptions are restricted to lesser data sizes of under 96 kilobytes. Ethscriptions can only be images, unlike Ordinals, which can also be text, video, or even video games. The developers of Ethscription do, however, indicate that they intend to ultimately integrate additional file formats.
