Metaverse Gaming Gains Popularity!

By Vishakha Thakur

Gaming has always been a natural fit for virtual reality. Even early 2D immersive games, such as Minecraft and Second Life, contained 3D avatars. As firms like Epic Games strive to establish a connected universe of virtual realities, gaming has found a new home in the metaverse. Metaverse gaming brings together a community of people to participate in online games. Users can even connect with others to play games, socialise, or go on trips. According to a report by markets and markets, the metaverse gaming industry is going to reach $119.2 billion by 2028.

What Does Gaming in Metaverse Look Like?

The metaverse is a unified and interoperable virtual reality arena in which users can interact with one another and with the digital world around them using advanced human-computer interaction gear and software. This takes virtual reality gaming to astonishing new heights. VR gameplay is currently available as independent applications that may be installed on your desktop, VR gear, or mobile phones to engage in an immersive recreation of classic video games. The key difference is that the in-game environment now appears as a three-dimensional virtual reality world that you can observe in 360 degrees and virtually touch with a realistic sense of perception. Players will be able to move between gaming applications, communicate with the same players in different places, and even port their victories.

Metaverse Gaming will have the following characteristics:

  • Games as platforms: Players can use the gaming environment to construct subgames by treating it as a platform.
  • Social gaming: Players can invite real-life friends and connect with other players.
  • Play to earn: Players can earn money by engaging in profitable activities.
  • Interoperable Games: Avatar upgrades acquired in one game could be portable to another one.
  • Mixed Reality: Gaming in metaverse could even incorporate mixed reality experience.

There are various companies which are trying their best to build immersive gaming environments.

The early movers are: Decentraland, Sandbox, Epic Games, and Meta.

Decentraland

Decentraland is one of the first companies that actively attempted to create a metaverse. It has a 3D VR platform with measured real estate, an Ethereum-based virtual digital asset, and separate locations for multiplayer gameplay. Decentraland has also invested in Decentral Games in order to expand its games possibilities.

Sandbox

Sandbox is yet another video game that allows you to play, construct, own, and manage a virtual area. The Sandbox economy is built on user-generated crypto and NFT assets, and it collaborates with worldwide companies to provide unique and enriching experiences.

The Sandbox marketplace includes over 20,000 NFTs available for purchase and incorporation into your VR reality.

Epic Games

Epic Games is well known for Fortnite, a virtual reality game and event venue in one. With the surge in popularity of Fortnite, artists from all over the world have performed using the game’s metaverse-like powers. Epic Games intends to invest $1 billion in developing its own game metaverse.

Meta

Meta has a strong history of VR innovation. Facebook created a comprehensive immersive world around its Oculus family of products, and these advances will continue to shape the company’s metaverse vision. Developers can use Horizon Worlds by Meta to create and publish games within the metaverse.

VR and video games in general have always had to deal with legal and ethical difficulties, and the metaverse will be no exception.

Essential concerns:

  • Child appropriate controls: If avatars are heavily customised, it can be difficult to monitor children’s activity and discern children apart from adults. Games must include adequate controls to ensure age-appropriate experiences.
  • NFT ownership rights: The laws governing the ownership of in-game assets are still hazy. NFTs obtained during a game may not be globally transferable.
  • Infrastructure shortcomings: The huge scale of interoperability required to construct a game metaverse has yet to be realised.

Metaverse games are the outcome of recent advancements in the gaming industry. Players are accessing Web3 based games to experience next-generation gaming, with corporations now favouring decentralised projects since the future appears to be taking a decentralised approach.
