India has launched a pilot program in Gujarat to use the digital rupee for food distribution. The goal is to make the Public Distribution System faster, more transparent, and easier to use.
Under this program, people will receive digital vouchers directly into special wallets. These vouchers are issued as programmable digital rupees by the Reserve Bank of India. Beneficiaries can use QR codes at ration shops to buy food grains.
India’s food system supports more than 80 crore people, making it the largest in the world. The government intends to lessen issues like machine mistakes and biometric failures by implementing digital currency. Additionally, all transactions will be digitally documented, increasing openness.
The pilot has begun in a few Gujarati districts and might eventually spread to other areas. According to officials, this move will modernise welfare payments and streamline the system for business owners and families alike.
